Woman fined for having gambling paraphernalia 

Kota Kinabalu: A 32-year-old woman was fined RM1,300 or one month’s jail by the Magistrate’s Court here for having gambling paraphernalia.

Welsa Totoh pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to having three pieces of lottery tickets without a licence on April 1, this year, at 2pm, at Donggongon town, Penampang.

The charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, provides for a fine of up to RM5,000, or a jail term of up to six months, or both, on conviction.

The court heard from the prosecution that a police team conducted Ops Dadu at the location following information received.

During a body search, police seized several items used in an unlicensed public lottery gambling operation from Welsa.

Welsa was arrested and the seized items were taken to the Penampang police station for further investigation.

Unrepresented, Welsa requested for leniency.

Inspector Dzulfamie Amrin, prosecuting, applied for an appropriate sentence.

The court also ordered RM20 in seized cash to be forfeited to the Government.

In another case, an unemployed man was charged with having stolen properties.

Razman Abdul Harris pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus to having the stolen items including several boxes of medicines belonging to a personal care retailer at One Borneo Hypermall here, at 6pm, on Aug 17.

The charge was framed under Section 411 of the Penal Code.

The prosecution proposed bail of RM4,000 pending pre-trial case management.

Duty counsel Jasamine Tan, representing Razman, requested lower bail, saying he was single and unemployed.

Dzul Elmy fixed Sept 29 for PTCM and released Razman on RM1,800 bail in two sureties.

Inspector Mohamad Hamidi Mohamad Hamzah prosecuted.
