In declining the invitation to join the current government, PAS has asserted its role as the guardian of Malay interests within the political landscape.

Vice-president Datuk Idris Ahmad's rejection echoes the sentiment that Perikatan Nasional serves as the "umbrella" for Malays, a claim fueled by perceived shortcomings of Umno within Barisan Nasional.

Idris Ahmad's scepticism towards Anwar Ibrahim's administration, despite having secured significant parliamentary support, reflects PAS's apprehension about potential fissures within the unity government.

The refusal to align with the ruling coalition may be a strategic move to maintain PAS's distinct identity and political autonomy.

The party's decision gains context when considering Anwar's lack of a distinct 'wow' factor as a new prime minister, according to Idris.

PAS seems hesitant to be associated with a leader whose reform agenda and prior criticisms, once in opposition, may not have yielded substantial results.

The alleged involvement of an international Islamic movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, in brokering peace between PAS and Anwar adds a layer of complexity.

While PAS's refusal to engage in such mediation signals a commitment to independent decision-making, it also raises questions about the party's openness to international collaboration.

Anwar's persistence in wooing PAS into the government, despite having a parliamentary majority, suggests a desire for broader consensus and inclusivity.

The prime minister emphasises that any potential cooperation hinges on PAS's willingness to align with the government's policies on Malaysia's diverse socio-religious landscape.

The advantages of PAS remaining on the outside lie in preserving its ideological purity and safeguarding its base.

However, this choice also carries risks – it might limit the party's influence on policy decisions and the trajectory of the nation.

As Anwar keeps the doors open for future cooperation, PAS must carefully weigh the potential benefits of maintaining independence against the opportunities for shaping the nation's direction from within the unity government.

Anyway, for the near future, PAS sees little to be gained from supporting the government of the day knowing full well that the sentiments of its largely Malay based electorate in the heartlands are not in sync with the aspirations of the national leadership.
