Ismail Sabri successfully undergoes leadless pacemaker procedure

FORMER prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has successfully undergone a leadless pacemaker procedure at the National Heart Institute (IJN) to treat an abnormal heart rhythm.

IJN confirmed the procedure in a statement today, saying Ismail Sabri had been advised to rest following the treatment.

"IJN confirms that Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri successfully underwent a leadless pacemaker procedure to treat an abnormal heart rhythm.

"Following the procedure, he has been advised to rest. Therefore, visits are currently limited to immediate family members to support his recovery process and ensure his privacy is maintained," the statement said.

IJN also appealed to the media and public to respect the privacy of the Bera MP and his family throughout the recovery period.

"Any further developments, if applicable, will be communicated through authorised official channels," it said.

Earlier, the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court postponed proceedings to charge Ismail Sabri to Aug 27 on health grounds.

Judge Suzana Hussin fixed the new date after Ismail Sabri’s lawyer, Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad, informed the court that his client was receiving treatment at IJN and was scheduled to undergo a procedure related to an irregular heartbeat, or arrhythmia.

Amer Hamzah also reportedly confirmed that charges had already been filed against his client.

He said Ismail Sabri experienced health problems while he was at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for questioning yesterday, before being rushed to IJN.

The court subsequently allowed the postponement of the reading of the charges and recording of his plea until 9am on Aug 27.

Ismail Sabri had previously been called several times to give statements to MACC in connection with a declaration of assets made by him to the anti-graft agency.

MACC also seized RM170 million in cash in various foreign currencies and confiscated 16 kilogrammes of pure gold bars estimated to be worth RM7 million as part of its investigation into alleged corruption and money laundering involving him.

The seizures were made during searches of residences and offices believed to have been used as "safe houses", following investigations into four senior aides to Ismail Sabri who were detained in February 2025. - August 8, 2026
