Israel and Lebanon have agreed to renew a ceasefire between the two countries, according to a joint statement by the United States, Lebanon and Israel.
The ceasefire is contingent on a complete cessation of attacks by the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia and the evacuation of all Hezbollah operatives from areas south of the Litani River, the countries involved said in a joint statement published by the US State Department.
"The two sides agreed ... to swiftly advance the creation of pilot zones in which the Lebanese Armed Forces will take exclusive control of the territory to the exclusion of all non-state actors," the statement read.
It was unclear how the security zones would be set up.
"These steps will enable progress towards a comprehensive peace and security agreement."
The new terms follow a US-brokered ceasefire that took effect in April but failed to stop the fighting, with both sides accusing each other of repeated violations.
