Jack Draper ready to embrace the challenge of ‘tricky’ Wimbledon opener

Jack Draper is ready to embrace the challenge of facing world number seven Taylor Fritz after the “lottery” of his unseeded status handed him a daunting Wimbledon opener.

The 24-year-old was at the mercy of the draw for his home grand slam, having plummeted down the rankings following an injury-ravaged year.

He was paired with sixth-seeded American Fritz on Friday morning before his competitive warm-up for the championships ended with a 7-5 6-3 defeat by Ugo Humbert in the Lexus Eastbourne Open semi-finals.

Draper leads Fritz 3-2 in their head-to-head meetings, including a straight-sets victory en route to winning Indian Wells last year.

Speaking of the draw, he said: “It’s definitely a tricky one, isn’t it? I was prepared that I was going to play someone who’s a top seed.

“I’ve lost my ranking and I’ve lost my seeded place in the slam so I have to work up the rankings to get that back, so it’s a lottery really.

“Obviously Taylor is a great player. We’ve played multiple times already, and it’s going to be a really, really good battle. It’s going to be a tough match. I’m looking forward to it.”

Draper has never progressed beyond the second round of Wimbledon.

His blockbuster first-round draw against an opponent who reached the semi-finals in 2025 was followed by disappointment at Devonshire Park.

The former world number four had been bidding to reach a first final since losing to Casper Ruud at last year’s Madrid Open – the event which marked the start of a persistent problem with his racket arm.

Despite falling short, he has taken confidence from a promising week on grass under the guidance of new coach Andy Murray, having also been troubled by knee and shoulder issues during a difficult last 12 months.

“(It’s been) massively positive,” said the current world number 160, who reached the last four courtesy of straight-sets wins over Marcos Giron, Jack Pinnington Jones and Gabriel Diallo.

“(I’m) a bit annoyed right now but, at the same time, a couple weeks ago I didn’t know where I was.

“To have made the strides that I’ve made and to actually be playing some really good tennis and make a semi-final at a tour event straight away, it’s not easy.

“I’m really proud of that and I’m very happy with the people I’ve got around me. I’m kind of starting again with things, so it’s a good start.”

Frenchman Humbert celebrated his 28th birthday by reaching the 12th ATP Tour final of his career.

The sixth seed broke Draper in game 12 to clinch the opening set and then repeated the trick in game six of the second to pave the way to victory in an hour and 42 minutes.

Belgium’s Zizou Bergs awaits Humbert in Saturday’s final.

The world number 48 earlier extinguished the prospect of an all-British final in East Sussex by battling back from a set down to defeat lucky loser Toby Samuel 4-6 7-6 (5) 6-2.
