KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin welcomed Budget 2027 for its focus on tourism and international connectivity, saying it will support preparations for Visit Sabah 2027.
He said the Federal allocation for Sabah increased to RM18.7 billion from RM17.6 billion this year, reflecting the Federal Government’s continued commitment to the State’s development.
Jafry said the RM935 million allocated nationally for tourism and culture also gave Sabah room to strengthen destination promotion, tourism product development and cultural heritage preservation ahead of Visit Sabah 2027.
He called the matching grants for international flights and special charter flights a strategic move that could strengthen air links between Sabah and key markets, including China, India, Central Asia and Europe.
Better air connectivity, he said, is vital to raising Sabah’s competitiveness as an international destination and would open opportunities for the local tourism industry.
On conservation, Jafry welcomed the attention given to Danum Valley, which has been identified as a potential heritage site for improved facilities and Unesco recognition.
He also said better roads and basic infrastructure are important to widen access to rural tourism destinations and boost economic activity in local communities.
“Sabah welcomes the emphasis on the tourism sector, especially efforts to improve facilities, strengthen promotion and expand international flight networks.
“This is in line with our efforts to increase tourist arrivals, encourage longer stays and ensure the economic benefits of tourism are enjoyed by more Sabahans.
“Tourism development and environmental conservation must go hand in hand. Sabah’s biodiversity is an invaluable asset and must continue to be protected through a responsible approach to development.
“Our priority is not merely to bring more tourists to Sabah, but to ensure they explore more destinations, stay longer and benefit local communities directly.
“The Ministry will continue to work closely with Federal ministries and agencies to make the most of Budget 2027 initiatives, so that Sabah is better positioned as a competitive and sustainable international tourism destination,” he said.
