Jailed for damaging police car

Kota Kinabalu: The Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday jailed an unemployed man 14 months for damaging a police car, last year.

Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin meted out the sentence to Mohd Faizul Samsuddin, 20, who changed his plea to guilty to the charge under Section 427 of the Penal Code.

AdvertisementFaizul admitted to committing mischief by breaking the left side mirror of the police car, which was driven by Corporal Dolis Rantai, using a unit of metal cutter, which caused a loss of RM2,106.35, on Nov 17, 2024, at 3.20am, by the roadside of a Muslim Cemetery in Putrajaya, Telipok.

Faizul’s case came up for pre-trial case management on Tuesday and he informed the court that he wished to plead guilty to the charge. Faizul had on Jan 7, this year claimed trial to the charge, which carries a jail term of between one year and five years or a fine or both, on conviction.

The pair had fled from a roadside inspection by patrol police near Kg Binaung, Manggatal. The patrol police gave chase and when they reached the scene, Faizul threw a metal cutter at the police vehicle, a Honda Civic, striking the left side mirror and causing damage.

AdvertisementThe motorcycle subsequently skidded off the road, and both men fled, abandoning the motorcycle along with suspected burglary tools at the scene. The estimated damage amounted to RM2,106.35, the court heard.

Counsel Carmen Khoo, representing Faizul, requested a lenient sentence citing that he is single, currently unemployed and was remorseful.
