Kota Kinabalu: A 33-year-old unemployed man was sentenced to eight months’ jail on Friday for keeping a stolen car.

Al Shofri Sulaiman pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to keeping a stolen Honda City belonging to John Frederick on Jan 10, this year, at 12.45pm, at Manggatal Plaza.

AdvertisementThe charge under Section 411 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of between six months and five years and liable to a fine, on conviction.

The facts of the case presented by the prosecution stated that the car was reported stolen from the complainant’s house in Kepayan on Dec 30, last year.

Police investigations revealed that Shofri used the stolen car for burglary activity.

The court ordered Shofri to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest.

Mohd Hazfizi Jumat admitted to keeping a stolen Yamaha Y15ZR motorcycle belonging to Ag Saiful Rezam on Dec 12, 2024. At 7.30am, at a garage in Kg Sinar Jaya, Tanjung Bulat, Kota Kinabatangan.

The facts of the case stated that the complainant lodged a police report that his motorcycle parked on the third floor of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport went missing.

Police, acting on information arrested Hazfizi at Kg Sinar Jaya, Kota Kinabatangan for keeping the stolen machine.

Investigations revealed that Hazfizi had altered the motorcycle’s registration plate, but a check with the IPRS MySikap JPJ confirmed that the chassis and engine numbers matched those of the complainant’s motorcycle, which had been reported stolen.

Hazfizi was also ordered to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest.

The court also ordered the stolen car and motorcycle to be returned to its rightful owner.

In another case, seven people were penalised for committing drug-related offences.

Four of them - Julhari Abd Rahman, 29, Jackner Pilin, 31, Lee Kian Fui and Md Basir Sali pleaded guilty to having syabu weighing 0.11gm, 0.08gm, 0.04gm and 0.29gm, respectively.

Julhari was jailed nine months, Jackner and Lee were handed eight months jail each, while Basir was fined RM3,000 or nine months jail.

The offence under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drug Act (DDA) 1952 provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years jail or both on conviction.

Basir and three other men – Rothman Hamdan, Jenray Jufri and Md Ferhad Suhaimi admitted to taking syabu and amphetamine.

Basir was fined RM2,000 or jailed six months, Ferhad was fined RM2,300 or jailed six months while Rothman and Jenray were jailed seven and eight months respectively.

They were charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the DDA, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail on conviction.
