Kota Kinabalu: The Magistrate’s Court on Friday jailed an unemployed man 11 months for keeping a roll of stolen cable belonging to a telecommunications company.

Nazri Hassan, 33, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali to having the stolen item belonging to Telekom Malaysia at Jalan Ratau, Kg Tebobon, Menggatal, at 11.55am on Dec 10.

Nazri was charged under Section 411 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to five years or fine or both, on conviction.

The court heard from Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Ling Guong Zhin that following investigations by police, Nazr and his three accomplices were arrested in a Tebobon hotel and inside a vehicle.

Nazri’s duty counsel Carmen Khoo requested a lenient sentence while DPP Ling requested a deterrent sentence.

Nazri was also charge under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act but no plea was taken as the chemist report is pending.

The case will be mentioned on Feb 7 and no bail was offered.

In another case, a 22-year-old woman was fined RM1,800 or 10 month’s jail for having gambling paraphernalia.

Nur Fatihah Subana admitted to purchasing four pieces of illegal 4-D tickets at a premises in Donggongon at 3pm on Oct 4.

The offence under Section9 (1) of the Common Gaming House Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000, or up to six months jail or both, on conviction.

DPP Ling informed the court that Nur Fatihah was arrested by police and seized four lottery tickets, handphone, mobile printer and RM68 cash.

The court ordered the seized money to be forfeited as government revenue.

Meanwhile, a 33-year-old man was sentence to three months’ jail for stealing a fan.

Meni Amir admitted committing the offence at Alamesra on Dec 13.

DPP Ling, informed the court that Meni was seen by the cleaner with another accomplice carrying the fan at 6.40am.

He was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code which carried a jail term of up to 10 years and liability of a fine, on conviction.

Duty Counsel Carmen applied for a lenient sentence as he is unemployed and is married with two children.

Meni was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest.
