
Dhakk Sports and Welfare Club (regd), Phagwara, in collaboration with the village panchayat, NRI residents and local villagers, organised a kabaddi cup tournament at Dhakk Pandori village to honour the services and contributions of veteran Kabaddi players. Former sarpanch Gursharan Singh Cheema inaugurated the tournament by cutting the ribbon after an ardas ceremony.
Eight teams participated in the kabaddi competition. Shaheed Bhagat Singh Kabaddi Club, Rurki emerged as the winner and was awarded a cash prize of Rs 51,000 along with a trophy. Anandpur Sahib Kabaddi Club, Bholewal finished as runners-up and received Rs 41,000 in prize money. The best raider title was jointly won by Mana Fattudhinga and Kindu Rurka, while Nag Didwindi was declared best stopper.
During the tournament, kabaddi promoters Jatinder Johal and Subhash from USA honoured veteran kabaddi player Kala Firozpuriya with a motorcycle and presented Rs 51,000 in cash to Mana Fattudhinga for his outstanding performance. Exhibition matches by girls and young children remained a major crowd-puller during the tournament.
The prize distribution ceremony was attended by Lok Sabha Member and Phagwara Assembly constituency in-charge Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal as the chief guest, while Kamaljit Banga, president of Congress District Kisan Wing, SBS Nagar, attended as the special guest. They appreciated the efforts of the club and said such events encourage youth to stay away from drugs and participate in sports linked to Punjab’s rich heritage. On the occasion, Dr Chabbewal announced a grant of Rs 5 lakh for the development of the village sports ground.
Kamaljit Banga also honoured the girls’ and children’s teams with medals. The club presented mementos to distinguished guests, supporters and contributors. Club president Lucky Sobha, former sarpanch Gurcharan Singh Cheema, journalist Vijay Pal Singh Teji and Channa Pandori were honoured with the award of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Gursharan Singh Cheema thanked all guests, supporters and NRI contributors for their cooperation. The stage proceedings were conducted by Vijay Pal Singh Teji. A large number of sports enthusiasts attended the tournament and enjoyed the matches. Arrangements for cold drinking water, tea, snacks and community langar were also made throughout the event.
Among those present were kabaddi star Jagga Sikandarpuriya, Lakhwinder Singh Lakhi, senior AAP leader Garhshankar, Tavinder Ram, chairman market committee Phagwara, Seema Rana, Manish Kaul, youth president of Shri Guru Ravidas Tiger Force Punjab, Kulwinder Singh Chattha and several other dignitaries.
