Like so many of us, New York Knicks superstar Jalen Brunson was swept in World Cup fever when watching Argentina’s dramatic win over Cape Verde.
‘Captain Clutch’, fresh from leading the Knicks to NBA Finals victory, was thrilled watching what many consider to be the best game so far at this World Cup.
In their debut at this tournament, Cape Verde have arguably been the standout story. They drew with Spain in their opening match before drawing with both Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.
Without being patronizing, getting through to the knockout stages was a remarkable achievement in itself and they almost caused the biggest World Cup shock in history.
Brunson blown away by Argentina vs Cape Verde
When Lionel Messi scored yet another brilliant goal in the 29 minute, the world champions looked set for a fairly routine win.
Cape Verde, however, would level the scores through Deroy Duarte, which took the game to extra-time. Argentina took the lead once again through Lisandro Martinez but Sidny Cabral fired in one of the most remarkable goals in the tournament’s history.
A header from Cristian Romero, however, would see Argentina get through to the quarter-finals without the need for penalties.
Watching on, one of the leading stars in the NBA in the form of Brunson took to social media platform X to write: “That match was unbelievable.”
The Cape Verde story has been fascinating. They have been a success story beyond all expectations and that game will live long in the memory.

While Argentina eventually won the game, the world is only talking about Cape Verde.
The world champions will now meet Egypt in the round of 16 next week as they look to become the first team since Brazil in 1958 and 1962 to retain the biggest trophy that soccer has to offer.
