Japan fans are facing a backlash for cleaning up at World Cup stadiums but not in their own homes.
As has become customary at sporting events, Japan supporters collected their rubbish in plastic bags following the 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in their opener in Texas on Sunday. The squad also left their dressing room spotless.
But the BBC reported on Friday that partners back in Japan are asking why those away at the World Cup do not also tidy up when at home.
Men in Japan have to "pitch in more at home," said one social media poster while another mused, "Everyone wants to save the world, but no one wants to help mom do the dishes."
According to 2021 data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Japanese women spend over five times longer each day on housework than men.
Among highly developed countries, Japanese men are among those who do the lowest share of household chores.
Japan next face Tunisia on Saturday near Monterrey in Mexico.
