KOTA KINABALU: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey G Kitingan has suggested that Sabah Day be marked on a separate date to avoid coinciding with the National Day celebrations on August 31.

He said possible alternatives include August 8, the date when the North Borneo Legislative Council reconfirmed the State’s decision to form Malaysia, or September 1.

Jeffrey, who is also Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister, said the idea would be discussed with other state leaders before any decision is finalised.

Speaking at the Sabah Day Forum, held in conjunction with the 2025 celebrations themed “Untukmu Sabah, Tanah Airku”, he stressed that the theme reflects the importance of safeguarding, strengthening and developing Sabah as a homeland for future generations.

He also highlighted the value of learning Sabah’s history through forums, noting that many aspects may not be fully covered in school curricula but remain essential for deepening understanding of the State’s heritage.
