John Obi Mikel has added his voice to the ongoing discussion about Cole Palmer’s position, saying the Chelsea forward is being misused on the wing and should be played solely as a Number 10.
Chelsea’s recent shift has seen Enzo Fernandez take up a more central role, pushing Palmer out wide over their last two Premier League matches.
The change hasn’t played into Palmer’s strengths. He hasn’t scored or assisted in any games where he’s been used on the flank this season, compared to nine goals and five assists from his preferred central position.
Injuries haven’t helped either. Palmer has been dealing with a groin issue that’s lingered throughout the season, which has also contributed to his inconsistent form.
But John Obi Mikel thinks it’s more about how Liam Rosenior is using him than anything else.
John Obi Mikel urges Liam Rosenior to use Cole Palmer in central role

Liam Rosenior has already come under some early scrutiny from John Obi Mikel, who said the club hadn’t made any progress under the new manager compared to where things stood when Enzo Maresca was in charge.
Now, speaking on the Obi One podcast, Mikel had more to say about Palmer’s role in the team.
“Why are you playing Cole Palmer out of his position so many times? I’ve said it here. So many times I’ve hinted it. Cole Palmer is our best player.
“Yes, he’s come back from injury. Yes, he hasn’t hit the, you know, the heights, the standards that we’re accustomed to him playing, the level that we’re accustomed to him playing, the creativity that we know that he can bring to the squad, the ability that he has.
“We know he hasn’t hit the heights yet because he’s been in and out, in and out with injuries. He played so many games last season. Of course, in a man you can expect him to at some point break down. He’s only a human being and that’s what’s happened.
“But he’s come back to the team now. Build a team around Cole Palmer in his best position. In his best position, play Cole Palmer as the number 10 which is where every Chelsea fan me included want to see because thats where you getthe best out of him.”
