It was difficult not to get excited after seeing Jordan Spieth post a 65 in the opening round of the Cadillac Championship this past week.
Spieth’s form this year is particularly intriguing. He has finished inside the top 25 in six PGA Tour events without registering a single top 10.
Unfortunately, he was unable to break 70 again in the final three rounds at Cadillac Championship and ended up finishing in a tie for 18th at Doral.
Johnson Wagner doubts Jordan Spieth or Justin Thomas will ever return to their best
It is more than four years since Jordan Spieth won on the PGA Tour. Next year will also mark a decade since his most recent major victory. Few would have ever imagined back in 2017 that he would reach the 2026 PGA Championship still awaiting a fourth major title.
Meanwhile, while Justin Thomas has registered a top 10 this year, his form since returning from injury has been a concern.
He has not finished inside the top 20 in any of his last four starts, ending both The Masters and the RBC Heritage over par for the week.

They remain two of the biggest names on the tour. However, speaking on Scorecard on CBS Sports, Johnson Wagner admitted that he does not believe that either player has their best years ahead of them now.
“No, I don’t. I think you’re spot on [that Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas have played their best golf already]. I’m just sad to hear you say it that way because I want Jordan Spieth to have a resurgent year and have a 2015-type season. But you’re probably right, it’s not going to happen,” he said.
“More likely is to have a Tiger Woods, 2018, where he has a couple of wins and picks off a major. JT, what does he have, 15 wins? And 14 of them happened in a pretty narrow window, so I think you’re probably right about that, unfortunately.”
The recent major records of Spieth and Thomas are extremely concerning
Spieth always used to guarantee entertainment. It did not matter if he was in contention or not, he would give the fans their money’s worth.
But it is alarming that he is no longer the box office attraction. Similarly, Thomas seems to be desperately searching for that magic formula.
The pair have won five major titles between them. However, it would be no surprise if neither won another of the four biggest events of the year.
In fact, both Spieth and Thomas have only managed one major top 10 since the start of the 2023 season. The last for either came at the 2024 PGA Championship.
It would be foolish to completely write off either player’s chances of winning another major. But, as Wagner suggests, it may be more of a swan song than the start of a full career revival.
