JOHOR BAHRU: Voter turnout for the Johor state election reached 26.43% as of 11am today, with between 700,000 and 709,000 voters having cast their ballots, according to the Election Commission (EC).
EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the figure was higher than that recorded at the same time during the previous Johor state election, when voter turnout stood at around 21%.
“We hope this momentum will continue into the afternoon to ensure as many registered voters as possible come out to vote,” he told reporters after inspecting the voting process at SMK Bandar Uda Utama here.
Ramlan said the EC remained confident that voter turnout could reach between 65% and 70% by the close of polling.
He acknowledged, however, that weather conditions could affect voter turnout, particularly if rainfall continues in several areas.
The Johor state election sees 172 candidates contesting all 56 state seats, with voters casting their ballots today to elect the new state government.
