Junior shuttlers emerge runners-up

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah junior shuttlers finished as runners-up at the Affin-100Plus Junior Elite Tour (1st leg) 2026-Group C tournament concluded at the KBA Hall in Alor Setar in Kedah on Sunday.

They took home two golds, two silvers and four bronze medals to finish behind host state Kedah.

The gold medal winners were Avrirlle Tan who captured the girls singles under-12 title by defeating Kedah’s Ang Sin Yee 21-16,21-9 in the final and the doubles pair of Izz Hadirah Mohd Rushdi/Wisyah Zahrah Zuyyin Nurfadli who beat teammates Charolene Jess Christopher/Elizabellacyanne Lim Suk Yung 21-5, 21-11 in the final of the girls doubles Under-12.

The other silvers were secured by Chiara Diaz Lau Jit Wai/Deirdre Gianna Michael after they lost to Kedah’s Chor Yoon Qian/Lau Xin En 15-21, 19-21 in the girls double Under-16 final.

The bronze medals were delivered by Wisyah Zahrah (girls singles Under-12), Muhd Hamizan Isyraq Glenny/Muhd Firdaus Sulaiman (boys doubles Under-14), Siti Nur Hanisah Zunaide/Farisya Dania Muhd Nazri (girls doubles Under-16) and Charlotte De Lucky LK Charles/Avrielle Tan Xuan (girls doubles Under-12).

Team manager Rechine Jikah, who served as Sabah Badminton Association secretary, congratulated the medal winners and he emphasised the importance of training harder in preparation for the second leg of the tournament, set to take place in Terengganu in April.

He also expressed his gratitude towards everyone who contributed, both directly and indirectly, to the team’s success in finishing second overall.
