SHAH ALAM - JustGO, Malaysia’s first Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)-based toll payment system, has surpassed three million transactions under real traffic conditions, marking another step towards the adoption of MultiLane Fast Flow (MLFF) tolling in the country.

Available across 93 toll plazas and 966 lanes, the system allows registered highway users to enter and exit participating toll plazas through any available lane, without being restricted by their payment method.

Known as #Lane Freedom, the approach places vehicle number plates at the centre of toll payment, potentially reducing queues caused by motorists having to select specific lanes for different payment methods.

“JustGO takes away a common problem we have at toll plazas, which is bottlenecks due to lane-based payment. Now, I can easily choose another lane instead of staying in that queue,” said JustGO user Victor Lee Wei Han.

JustGO uses ANPR technology to identify registered vehicle number plates and process toll payments through linked debit or credit cards.

Unlike conventional payment methods, users do not need to tap a card, reload a balance in advance or install an in-vehicle device. Registration is free, while normal toll fares continue to apply.

Another user, Amirul Hakim Roslan, said the system offered greater convenience by allowing motorists to choose lanes without having to remember which payment method they used when entering a highway.

“Sometimes I forget whether I entered using my card or RFID. At the exit, I am looking at signs, trying to remember. With JustGO, how I pay does not decide which lane I take. That is the real convenience for me,” he said.

At the MyASEAN Roads and Traffic Tech Expo (MyARTTE) 2026, JustGO demonstrated its #Lane Freedom concept through a display model and guided visitors through the vehicle registration and payment-linking process.

The event was held from Sept 30 to Oct 2 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) and was officiated by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

JustGO's open payment system currently supports debit and credit cards, with direct bank account payments and e-wallets expected to be introduced progressively.

The system's next phase involves expanding its availability to more highways, building on operational experience gained under real traffic conditions.

Wider highway coverage would allow users to experience more seamless toll payments across different networks while strengthening interoperability as Malaysia progresses towards MLFF.

During a 30-minute panel discussion titled “From Toll Plazas to Smart Highways: Building Malaysia’s Digital Tolling Ecosystem”, JustGO discussed the issue of queues caused by payment-specific lanes.

Another panellist examined the broader requirements for greater highway participation and the eventual implementation of MLFF, highlighting that technological readiness alone would not be sufficient.

Key enablers include infrastructure readiness, reliable digital systems and applications, prompt assistance when problems arise, public readiness to adopt new payment methods and a clear legal framework to address non-compliance.

These factors are important to ensure that the transition towards a more integrated tolling system can operate effectively across participating highways.

Highway users interested in using JustGO can download the application through the Apple App Store, Google Play or Huawei AppGallery.

After downloading the app, users must verify their identity, register their vehicle and link a payment method. Toll payment can begin once the vehicle’s ANPR status is displayed as “Active” in the application.

Vehicle registration helps verify and link the vehicle to the user's account, with further validation by the relevant authorities where necessary.

More information is available at justgo.com.my.

As the system expands, its ability to support flexible lane selection and multiple payment options will be an important part of efforts to develop a more integrated digital tolling ecosystem in Malaysia.
