Kanlaon Volcano records explosive eruption — Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines — The moderately explosive eruption of Kanlaon Volcano ended at around 12:48 p.m. on Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

In an earlier post, Phivolcs reported an ongoing moderately explosive eruption at the volcano.

“The event has ended around 12:48 pm. Details to follow,” the agency said in its latest update.

Phivolcs also used computer simulations based on the Oct. 10, 2026, eruption to guide ashfall impact monitoring in affected communities. The maps were generated using plume height data from the agency.

According to the simulation data, the eruption began at 12:46 p.m., with a plume height of 8.435 kilometers above sea level. The simulated ash-plume dispersion covered the period from 12:46 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The simulated ashfall map classified ash deposits into three levels: trace (1/256 inch), minor (1/32 inch) and substantial (1/4 inch), according to Phivolcs.

A separate plume-cloud height map showed levels of 6, 10 and 11 kilometers. The ash-load simulation indicated levels of 0.03, 1, 2 and 4 grams per square meter.

The simulations used Ash3D, an open-source dispersion model developed by the United States Geological Survey to simulate the movement and deposition of volcanic ash.

Phivolcs cautioned that the model output was not an official forecast and that perceptible ash may occur outside the forecast area.
