Learning from repeated flood damage in previous years, the Irrigation Department has launched extensive flood protection works along the Yamuna ahead of the monsoon to safeguard nearly 30 villages in Karnal district from flash floods.

The department has awarded works worth Rs 22 crore to six agencies for carrying out flood-control measures at 10 vulnerable locations along the river.

Every monsoon, villages situated near the Yamuna face the threat of flooding that damages crops, roads and residential areas. Among the most vulnerable villages are Dakwala, Lalupura, Sadarpur, Mundogarhi, Garhpur Tapu, Nabiabad, Nabipur, Jammukhala, Mustafabad, Nasirpur and Shergarh Tapu.

This year, the department completed the tendering and allotment process well in advance to ensure timely execution before the onset of the monsoon.

“After assessing the behaviour and changing course of the Yamuna during previous floods, several protection works were proposed at vulnerable locations. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has approved all proposed works of Karnal district during the 57th meeting of the Haryana State Drought Relief and Flood Control Board held on December 31, 2025,” said Manoj Kumar, Executive Engineer (XEN), Indri Water Services Division, Karnal.

“The work has already started and the target is to complete all projects by June 30,” he added.

According to the department, the supply of stone boulders has already begun, while construction of stone studs and strengthening of damaged studs and revetments will start shortly.

Major projects include flood protection works at the Modipur complex in Indri constituency costing Rs 4.25 crore, Shergarh Tapu complex (Rs 3.45 crore), Kundakalan complex (Rs 1.73 crore), Dhakwala complex (Rs 1.85 crore) and Dilawra complex (Rs 3.24 crore).

Similarly, works are underway at Manglora (Rs 3 crore), Sadarpur (Rs 2.39 crore), Lalupura (Rs 2.60 crore), Jadoli (Rs 1.23 crore) and Khirazpur (Rs 37 lakh).
