KUNAK: The road maintenance concessionaire company, Pembinaan Kekal Mewah, appointed by the Government under Kunak District Council, carried out repair works along Jalan Kg Kadazan 1 and Jalan Kg Kadazan 2 on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the company stated that major maintenance work was being carried out in areas that had suffered severe damage, particularly on Jalan Kg Kadazan 1, where water had accumulated and nearly covered the entire width of the road.

“We will also patch up several smaller potholes along the route, including Jalan Kg Kadazan 1 and 2. These works are expected to be completed within a day, depending on weather conditions. Our target is to finish them before the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations to ensure the road is safe for travel,” he told Daily Express at the site.

For severely affected areas, the company will carry out repairs in accordance with the recommended standard operating procedures before proceeding with permanent resurfacing.

“Following this, we will conduct regular monitoring of the road structures in this area,” he added.

According to him, road conditions have deteriorated due to frequent use by large lorries transporting oil palm produce.

“Jalan Kg Kadazan is classified as a rural road within the village, and its structural integrity may be compromised if it continues to be used by heavy vehicles carrying loads beyond the permitted limit,” he explained.

On Tuesday, Daily Express reported there were more than 60 potholes along the route, posing a risk to road users, particularly motorcyclists, light vehicles and four-wheel drives (4WDs).

Meanwhile, Kunak District Council Executive Officer Mohd Nazri Pintal said that the council had submitted two complaints regarding rural roads in the district — Jalan Jaya Baru and Jalan Kg Kadazan.

Both roads have since been repaired and are currently undergoing further maintenance.
