KK secure squash clean sweep at Sabah Closed

Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu’s players made a clean sweep in the just concluded Sabah Closed Squash Championship held at the Likas Squash Centre in Likas Stadium.

Tristan Andreas Muyou Angkaus and Syaireezatul @ Erin Addryana Pengiran Johari ruled supreme in the Under-17 category played in a round robin format.

Tristan captured the boys’ title with second and third place going to Danial Mohd Ali and Jeremy Wong Yu Yang respectively while Syaireezatul took the girls’ crown followed by Rachel Richard Gabil and Amber Kristy Muyou.

In the Under-15 category, Jedidiah Kwan Ming Zhe edged Clement Richard 11-9, 12-10, 6-10, 10-8 in the final to take the boys’ title with third place going to Ricoweldo Aloysius.

The girls’ title was won by Euodia Lai after a three-set 9-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-3 win over Velcy Veon with Branice Chin Kai in third.

Only the boys event was held in the round robin Under-13 category which saw Dave Elvin Stamos top the boys’ standing followed by Jediael Habel Jaffry and Gabryel Seth.

In the Under-11 category, Oswald Wong Sein Yao lived up to his top seed billing by beating second seed Md. Zidane Zicqree in five sets 8-11, 7-11, 12-10, 13-11, 11-6 followed by Isaac Andy Muyou in third, while Marion Jesse edged Francine Ava in another five-set thriller 18-16, 11-6, 7-11, 6-11, 13-11 to take the girls’ title with Velca Vionnie in third.

The three-day competition organised by Sabah Squash Association (SSA) attracted a total of 60 players from its affiliates.

President Datuk Charles O Pang in his closing speech presented by vice president Lai Pak Peng said they are very pleased with positive response.

“We are very satisfied with the tournament which was successfully held after a two-year lapse due to the pandemic. It also fulfilled our objective of finding new talents for the back-up squad.

“The players who participated had shown vast improvement and I hope they will take it to another level, and we are also very grateful to the Sabah State Sports Council for their support,” he said.

He added that currently they have Kota Kinabalu Squash Association, Tawau Squash Association and Sandakan Squash Association under their wings and those who need more information on joining the sport are urged to contact SSA at 016-8355568 (Florah), Kota Kinabalu at 016-8019000 (Jessye), Tawau at 013-8530783 (Sabri) and Sandakan at 013-9090951 (Adzmen).

The ceremony was attended by Sabah Sports Council officials Rezwan Osman and Azril Fakhree Khainih as well as Tawau Squash Association chairman Sainuddin Saling.

Meanwhile, Charles has been re-elected as president of SSA for another term at their Annual General Meeting held during the competition.

Lai also retained the vice president post with Dr. Dayang Maryama, Jessye Linog, Adzmen Kader, Sabri Baco and Liza Au as committee members while the secretary post went to Florah Muyou with Yardley Gan as treasurer.
