Kota Kinabalu crowned overall champs

Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu won the Mayor Cup boxing tournament held at Damai Multi Purpose Hall last week (December 4-6).

They captured five gold, six silver and three bronze medals to be crowned overall champions. Second place went to Keningau with three golds, two silvers and one bronze followed closely by Tambunan with three golds, one silver and two bronzes.

A total of eight teams from Tongod, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, Tambunan, Nabawan, Penampang, Keningau and Tawau took part in the three-day competition.

The closing ceremony was officiated by Youth and Sports Ministry deputy permanent secretary William Dabbi representing the Minister Datuk Ellron Angin.

The Minister in his speech commended Datuk Orlando Harumal, who is a Sabah “Tokoh Sukan” Sports Award recipient, for his leadership of the State body since 1971.

He also praised the boxers’ performance in the recent Malaysia Cup tournament where they secured second placing behind overall champions ATM.

Meanwhile, Orlando was pleased with the performance of the boxers in the competition and the hard work done by the organising committee.

He also thanked Sabah Sports Council, City Hall and the Army Fifth Division for their support.

Also present at the closing ceremony were former Mayor and ex-president of SBA Datuk Abdul Ghani Rashid and another ex-Mayor and Patron of SBA Datuk Nordin Siman.
