KUNAK: Ku Yee Aleng made Kunak proud after winning gold in the women’s high jump finals in the Sabah Games (Saga) at the Tuaran Sports Complex on Tuesday.

“This is a very proud moment for us because she not only won the gold medal, but she also broke the previous Sabah Games record in the women’s high jump event,” Kunak District Saga Contingent Deputy Head Hussin Mohd Rais told Daily Express on Wednesday.

Ku set a new record of 1.59-metre (m) in the women’s high jump while Sandakan’s Satra Hajad came second with a jump of 1.55m.

“Ku Yee Aleng will represent Sabah in the Malaysian Games (Sukma) next year in Sarawak,” Hussin said.

Hussin, who is also the Kunak Community Development Leader, said when the Saga concludes, a special celebration will be made to celebrate the victories and achievements of Kunak athletes.

“I will discuss together with the District Officer and officials from the Ministry of Youth and Sports particularly the form of appreciation that we will convey to the athletes who won medals in Saga,” he said.

In another development, he emphasised the importance of sports facilities in Kunak, particularly the long-awaited sports complex facility.

“We need a comprehensive sports complex with a suitable track for our athletes and students to train on.

“Our athletes and students has to train on grass and when they are selected to participate in athletics or other sporting events outside the district or at higher levels they have to adapt to the race track,” he said.
