In a major anti-drug initiative, the Delhi Police on Tuesday conducted its ninth mega drug destruction event, destroying nearly 1,700 kg of narcotic substances valued at around Rs 72 crore in the international market in the presence of Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu.

During the programme, the L-G also announced the establishment of Delhi’s first dedicated anti-narcotics task force (ANTF) police station aimed at strengthening the campaign against drug trafficking in the national capital, setting a collective goal of ‘drug-free Delhi’ by 2027.

Addressing the gathering, Sandhu said the destruction drive was not merely about disposing of seized narcotics but dismantling an ecosystem that threatens the youth, weakens families and harms society. Reiterating the vision of a drug-free India, he described the initiative as a step towards defeating destructive mindsets and safeguarding future generations.

The narcotics destroyed included 1,610 kg of cannabis, 21 kg of charas, 11 kg of heroin, 591 grams of cocaine, 21 kg of cannabis sativa and 30 kg of Alprazolam tablets seized by the Crime Branch and South District units of the Delhi Police.

According to the Delhi Police, with the latest destruction drive, the total quantity of narcotics destroyed since the launch of the anti-drug campaign has reached approximately 46,500 kg, valued at nearly Rs 13,830 crore in the international market.

Police officials said the campaign was being carried out in line with the “zero tolerance” policy against narcotics and the nationwide “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.” The Delhi Police stated that operations such as “Operation Kavach” intensified narcotics detection drives and sustained crackdowns on drug traffickers have significantly strengthened anti-drug enforcement efforts in the city.

Sharing enforcement figures, the police said between January 1 and April 30, 2026, a total of 1,129 cases under the NDPS Act were registered across Delhi, leading to the arrest of 1,397 alleged drug traffickers and peddlers. Financial investigations during the same period resulted in the seizure of assets worth over Rs 11.25 crore.

The police said detention orders under the PITNDPS Act had been issued against nine alleged drug peddlers this year, with two of them lodged in the Chennai Jail to break their local criminal networks. Proposals against 48 repeat offenders involved in narcotics trafficking are also under process.

The destruction event was held at Biotic Waste Solutions Pvt Ltd in the SSI Industrial Area on the GT Karnal Road near the Jahangir Puri Metro station. The destruction process was carried out in compliance with the Supreme Court guidelines, under the supervision of committees constituted to oversee the disposal of seized narcotics from cases dating between 1974 and 2025.

Officials said previous destruction drives were conducted on December 21, 2022; June 26, 2023; February 20, 2024; December 17, 2024; January 24, 2025; April 3, 2025; June 26, 2025; and September 29, 2025.
