LDP leader calls for safety barriers outside shops

Kota Kinabalu: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Vice President Sim Fui (pic) has proposed installing safety barriers such as bollards in front of shops to prevent vehicles from crashing into commercial premises.

He made the proposal following an incident early Tuesday in which a Perodua Kancil crashed into a coffee shop at Bornion Commercial Centre near Foh Sang at about 6.30am, injuring two people including a 50-year-old woman and causing losses of more than RM2,500.

Sim said City Hall (DBKK) should review high-footfall areas where shops directly face roads and consider installing crash barriers, safety bollards or other protective structures between parking bays and shopfronts.

He said such measures would provide a “second line of defence” for pedestrians and customers in the event of human error, while also helping define parking boundaries and prevent longer vehicles from extending into pedestrian walkways.

Sim, who is also LDP Api-Api divisional head, also proposed that protective barriers between commercial parking bays and pedestrian walkways be incorporated into planning and building requirements for new developments, based on factors such as road width, parking design and pedestrial volume.
