It’s been sixteen years since The Decision and now we are waiting on LeBron James again.
This time, there are deeper questions because money is not a consideration, and everything else is. He has mentioned that his priorities are meaningful basketball competitiveness, family stability, and long-term business alignment, but that’s in no particular order.
When he last moved to the LA Lakers, he was able to resolve the competitiveness a year after his transfer with the Anthony Davis trade. His family easily adjusted to the California weather, and LeBron made Hollywood the fulcrum of his budding business empire.
After eight years in the purple and gold, James will move again. It’s different now since he is in the twilight of his career. He is also not the first option anymore, and he is unlikely to have any influence with the roster.
In short, the King has to play with the cards he’s dealt. No more, no less. However, he can choose which deck to use.
Why Miami Makes Sense
The big draw is that LeBron is willing to play for the minimum. That solves so many problems for all the teams involved. His unique skillset and unequaled experience makes him adaptable to different basketball situations. However, he has the most value now as a playmaker.
The Heat will deploy the best defensive frontline in the league with Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo. That helps since defensive effort is no longer at the top of his totem pole at this stage. Miami needs his genius, and he will also play under a familiar coach, Erik Spoelstra whom he won two championships with.
LeBron has lived in Miami before, no need to adjust to the weather since he came from sunny California. Also, South Beach is a good business hub, comparable to LA.
Sure, he and Pat Riley did not separate on the best of terms. But Riley is a winner, and he knows well to not burn bridges. Pride won’t win championships - both James and the Godfather know that.
Sounds like a win, but it doesn’t fit the narrative.
Happiness Over Title Chase?
What’s the value of playing with Steph Curry? This is a fun narrative, and the Team USA experience became memorable because of the two most influential players playing together. Imagine a full season of that.
The issue is that all Golden State buzz was conditional. There was always a caveat of trading for Anthony Davis, but the Washington Wizards ended that. It’s doubtful that LeBron would prioritize the novelty of a Curry reunion over basketball success. He might not be title chasing, but he could choose not to be miserable.
The only other plus for the Warriors is that they are in California, where the James’ family built their home. But before that, they called another state home.
Full Circle at Cleveland
If he wants a narrative, then coming back home is a sentimental favorite. Going full circle where it all started, and possibly winning a second championship after giving them their first - that’s a storybook ending.
Besides, the Cavs went to the Eastern Conference Finals, they aren’t patsies, and definitely more successful than Golden State. The Cavs got swept by the New York Knicks, but they were in the middle of a legendary streak and hardly anyone could beat them at that point.
LeBron’s versatility will be tested, though. Both Donovan Mitchell and possibly, James Harden, are both ball-heavy players. LeBron is likely to favor a playmaking role, something the Lakers could not give him. That may also be a problem in Cleveland.
A New Distinction
There are only four players in NBA history who won championships with three different teams: John Salley, Robert Horry, Danny Green, and LeBron James.
No player has won championships with four different teams.
Which team could become a serious contender if they add LeBron James? Miami, but that’s not a new team for him. It’s also ironic that the LA Lakers could also be an answer.
But the clear answer is the Philadelphia 76ers. LeBron mentioned “Trust the Process” to tease everyone.
It’s playful, but possible.
