Former Malaysian finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin is scheduled to face charges at the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow, accused of failing to comply with a notice to declare his assets. The 85-year-old, whose real name is Che Abdul Daim Zainuddin, will appear before Judge Azura Alwi at 9 am for a case that has garnered significant attention.
Daim disclosed on January 28 that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had recorded his statement and that his lawyer had informed him of the impending charges. The offense in question falls under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act 2009, specifically related to the disclosure of assets. The MACC had received approval from the Attorney-General Chambers to proceed with charges against Daim, but the initiation had to be postponed due to his health condition. Daim had been admitted to a private hospital before the MACC obtained permission, delaying the legal proceedings.
This development follows a similar case involving Daim's wife, Toh Puan Na’imah Abdul Khalid, 66, who was brought to the same Sessions Court on January 23 for failing to declare her assets. The properties in question include Menara Ilham and several others located in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. The MACC clarified that the investigation was initiated in February of the previous year based on information obtained from the Pandora Papers. These documents revealed details about wealthy and influential individuals globally who were using offshore services or foreign companies to conceal their wealth.
The legal action against Daim and his wife underscores the authorities' commitment to addressing issues of financial transparency and disclosure. This becomes particularly significant given the backdrop of global revelations exposing individuals using offshore means to hide their assets. Daim's case highlights ongoing efforts to enforce accountability and integrity in financial matters within Malaysia's legal framework. As these legal proceedings unfold, they serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining transparency and combating financial improprieties at both national and international levels.
