Comedy was clearly at the forefront of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s star-studded wedding on Friday.
The Madison Square Garden ceremony was officiated by Adam Sandler and included a dinner speech from Girls creator Lena Dunham that had attendees “gasping.”
Dunham, 40, and Swift, 36, have been close friends since the early 2010s when Dunham was dating Swift’s musical collaborator Jack Antonoff. Swift later served as a bridesmaid at Dunham’s wedding to musician Luis Felber in 2021.
Dunham was among the speakers at Swift’s wedding, where she reportedly quipped that “American football is just straight guys reenacting gay porn.” Swift’s husband, Kelce, is widely regarded as one of the best tight ends in NFL history.
The risqué gag drew “gasps and laughs” from guests, according to a Daily Mail insider, who added that Swift immediately declared Dunham a “genius” after her speech.
The Independent has contacted representatives for Dunham and Swift for comment.
Dunham has often spoken about her close friendship with the “Lover” singer in the past.
“I’m always very careful to be protective of her in every single way,” she told The New Yorker in 2024. “Probably the two things I get asked most in life are ‘What is Taylor like?’ and ‘Can I have tickets to the Eras Tour?’ And usually my answer to both things is no.”
Guarding her against the criticism she often faces in the media, Dunham continued: “She’s kind, she’s devoted, she’s introspective, she’s emotional, she’s funny as f***. I guess my feeling sometimes is, Isn’t she giving us enough, guys?"
Dunham also described Swift’s music as her “church.”
“Even since before Taylor and I were friends, I just always had felt such a deep connection to her music,” she said.
“I’ve seen every tour she’s ever done. I love seeing a woman who’s not yet 40 being like, ‘Yes, I have a body of work.’ What I find inspiring is her acknowledgment of her own prolific expression.”
In her 2026 memoir, Famesick, Dunham included a dedication to Swift, which read: “TayTay — you sing the songs I wrote this book to, the stories that pulled these stories out of me, the music that makes the whole world feel seen. And yet somehow, miraculously, you also pick up every desperate call at every desperate hour.
“I love you so much and forever, for the reasons that everyone does and for reasons all my own.”
The Too Much creator appeared in Swift’s 2015 music video for “Bad Blood” and joined her on stage at the 1989 World Tour stop at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., the same year.
More recently, she attended Swift’s Eras Tour concert at Wembley Stadium in London in 2024 and joined her friend to watch Kelce at a Kansas City Chiefs game in December 2025.
