(UPDATE) MANILA, Philippines — The low pressure area (LPA), which was spotted east of Davao City, has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours, the state-run weather agency said on Wednesday.
Weather specialist Loriedin Dela Cruz-Galicia of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in a 5 a.m. briefing that once the LPA intensifies into a tropical cyclone, it would be named "Ada," the first storm to be hitting the country in 2026.
This early, she said, its (LPA) trough has already been affecting Eastern Visayas, Davao Region, Caraga, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental, and Bukidnon where cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms would occur.
Based on its data and analysis, Pagasa said the upcoming weather disturbance may directly affect the eastern sections of the Visayas, as well as Mindanao, especially on Friday and Saturday.
“There would also be a landfall scenario, that is why hoisting a wind signal would also be possible,” according to the Pagasa forecaster.
In other parts of the country, including Metro Manila, the easterlies – winds that carry humid and warm weather – will be bringing partly cloudy to overcast skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms in 24 hours, the national weather bureau said.
The northeast monsoon locally known as "amihan," as well as localized thunderstorms will also be experienced in other areas in the archipelago where cloudy skies with light rains would prevail, it added.
