So finally Tun Daim Zainuddin is investigated as Anwar promised he would, if PH was the government of the day!
It's incredible to have someone who is now almost as reclusive as the well known American recluse, Howard Hughes, obsessive about keeping his private life really private being lured out of his lair to meet investigators.
Daim is not even close to being Howard Hughes who suffered from OCD but he is well known for keeping a low profile and is indeed a publicity shy person.
On 13 February, MACC invited Daim to its headquarters in Putrajaya, courtesy of Anwar Ibrahim.
News report say the MACC focused on the leaked information that grew out of the Pandora's papers.
If you recalled, as leader of the Opposition then Anwar did propose that Parliament debate the disclosures by Pandora Papers but was declined by the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat then.
In fact, during one of the Parliamentary sessions some time in 2021, Anwar was reportedly quite angry when his request was rejected and he in turn accused the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat of deliberately rejecting the motion.
He even claimed that the Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan acted as a 'lawyer' for the political leaders and businessmen linked to the Pandora's report.
Anwar alleged that the Pandora Papers disclosure ought to be presented and debated because there are allegations which stated that the money from Malaysia kept abroad could be in hundreds of billions or even trillions of ringgit.
In addition, he also wanted the 2012 Global Financial Integrity (GFI) report and the Panama Papers disclosure in 2015 to be openly debated in Dewan Rakyat.
But he was not successful. The Law Minister promised his proposal would be considered and investigated in due time.
Apparently, GFI and the Panama Papers, had revealed that the amount of the illegal flow of money and funds kept abroad could be as much as RM1,800 billion from 2004 to 2015.
Later, somewhere on the campaign trails of GE15, Anwar reiterated and promised that if PH won, these disclosures would be investigated by the authorities.
In fact, Anwar Ibrahim has warned former finance minister Daim Zainuddin that the latter would have sleepless nights should he (Anwar) become prime minister. (FMT)
So, Anwar has fulfilled his election campaign promise but whether they would lead to any prosecution of individuals mentioned in the documents remain to be seen.
Daim is the first in the list of fifteen or so individuals mentioned in the Pandora's papers to be summoned as Anwar promised.
So far, MACC has not frozen any accounts belonging to Daim or his family which probably means that they have not seen any wrong doing committed by the former Finance Minister. So, for now Daim may sleep well.
According to latest reports, others will be called in by MACC for their personal statements in due course.
Clearly, Anwar is not letting up on his hunt for individuals involved in this form of white collar crime.
Whatever the outcome Anwar has honoured his promise to go after those mentioned in the Pandora's papers.
One reclusive personality is now investigated and we'll have to wait and see what happens to the rest of the fifteen on the list.
Meanwhile we think Daim sleeps well at night irrespective of Anwar's earlier warnings.
If he was kept awake nights it must be about other papers and certainly not Pandora's or AI.
