While waiting at a traffic light near KPJ Ampang Puteri, across from the Chancery development under the bridge, a local motorist’s routine drive took an infuriating turn.

What was supposed to be a standard commute turned into a frustrating encounter with aggressive roadside begging, prompting a broader public debate about syndicates operating across the Klang Valley. The viral post has sparked widespread attention across social media, drawing thousands of reactions from motorists facing similar dilemmas on Malaysian roads daily.

“What am I supposed to make of that?”

According to the anonymous Threads user, a group of Rohingya women and children were spotted systematically moving between cars at the red light. As traffic halted, one woman approached the front of the vehicles while another moved toward the back, eventually reaching the motorist’s window to ask for money.

However, when the driver chose not to give any money and took photos of the situation, the encounter quickly turned hostile.

“I was taking photos, and she then pointed her middle finger at me. Honestly, what am I supposed to make of that?” the motorist shared.

Concerns over possible organised begging syndicate

The user noted that the systematic way the individuals operate raises serious questions about whether this is an organised begging syndicate exploiting the sympathy of Malaysians, particularly given that children are actively involved.

Commuters frequently navigating the same roads have grown increasingly weary, noting that motorists routinely wind up their windows and ignore the persistent knocking.

Expanding on the systemic issue, the user to highlighted that these groups have been a persistent fixture for over a decade:

“It’s been more than 10 years, they are still there. If the law enforcement comes, they disappear for a couple of days, then they are back. But as of late they are much more aggressive in begging, and blooming like mushrooms everywhere: Setapak, Selayang, Ampang, Melawati, Bukit Bintang. I’ve seen Rohingya kids beg inside a mall in Setapak. They are everywhere.” the user said.

The user also expressed profound frustration with local authorities, sharing personal experiences of being bounced between agencies like Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat (JKM), and the Immigration Department without meaningful intervention, leaving citizens feeling like nothing is being done to curb the expanding issue.

The viral post has since struck a chord with hundreds of netizens, sparking widespread discussions on public safety, enforcement accountability, and the line between genuine compassion and exploitative syndicates.

Netizens’ reactions

“Please don’t feel sorry for them anymore… they shouldn’t be here anyway. Many countries have already chased them back because they couldn’t stand this group of people anymore. They’re so rude… look at how they can just flip you off like that, even though they came into someone else’s country illegally.”

“Showing the middle finger isn’t even that extreme. Some people will throw rocks at cars if you don’t give them money.”
