A Malaysian woman was left feeling lost after discovering that her fiancé allegedly had more debt than he had previously told her about.
According to a post, the couple are just three months away from their wedding, with deposits for the ceremony already paid and a home prepared for them.
However, she recently found out that her fiancé apparently has two car loans amounting to around RM230,000, as well as approximately RM52,000 in credit card debt.
Said they were honest about their debts from the start
What upset her most was not simply the amount owed, but the fact that she believed they had already been transparent about their respective financial commitments early in their relationship.
She said she felt “cheated” after finding out that the figures her fiancé previously shared with her were allegedly not accurate.
Fiancé allegedly plans to take personal loan
According to the woman, her fiancé is now considering taking out a personal loan to consolidate his scattered debts.
The plan is apparently to use the loan to settle several existing debts under one repayment arrangement, while using any remaining money for their wedding expenses.
Despite the situation, she acknowledged that she has seen him putting effort into earning money.
She said his monthly take home salary is around RM6,600 to RM7,000, and that he also takes on gig work for additional income.
However, after calculating his monthly expenses and financial commitments, she claimed that his income was barely enough to cover everything, and could sometimes leave him with a negative balance.
Unsure whether to tell her mother
The woman said the discovery has also affected her trust in the relationship.
Their wedding is due to take place in three months, and she said her fiancé has already paid the deposits for the ceremony and arranged a home for them.
She admitted that she now feels stuck over what to do next, including whether she should tell her mother about the situation.
Honestly, I don’t know what to do now. I don’t know whether I should tell my mum. I’m really lost, and my trust is already very fragile.”
Despite feeling overwhelmed, she said she still wanted to see whether there were expenses they could reduce to make his financial commitments more manageable.
For her, however, the bigger issue appears to be that the extent of the debt only came to light so close to their wedding.
Some netizen advised her not to rush into making a decision and suggested postponing the wedding until the couple had a clearer plan on how to settle the debt.
Netizen also suggested that she take charge of the household finances if she was better at financial planning, including managing her fiancé’s salary and keeping proper records of any money she contributes towards his expenses or debts.
