M'sian Mum In Fear After Loan Sharks Threaten To Cut Off Son's Arms Over RM183K Debt

A woman is at her wits’ end following relentless harassment and threats she and her family endured over unsettled debts her son had left behind.

She later turned to MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong in hopes that her nightmare would come to an end.

‘We’ll cut his arms off!’

Speaking at a press conference held today, Yeow said she and her family received threatening calls and messages from loan sharks on Sept 25, where they claimed her son had failed to repay his debts.

“My son allegedly borrowed money from 13 loan sharks under the guise that he needed it for business cash flow.

“His debts eventually snowballed to RM183,750 and he subsequently vanished,” she said as reported by China Press.

Yeow added that the loan sharks demanded that she pay off the debts, as well as threatened to cut off her son’s arms, set fire to her house, and even kidnap her relatives if she refused to comply.

“They also told me to hand over my son lest they be hot on my heels. But I have no idea what happened nor do I know where my son is!” she lamented.

Collateral damage

Aside from Yeow and her family, other innocent parties were also caught in the crossfire.

According to Yeow, her absconding son had previously operated a coffee shop in Petaling Jaya but handed it over to a new owner. He also owned a residential property before selling it off six years ago.

Since her son’s disappearance, Yeow said the loan sharks have been hounding the new coffee shop operator and property owner in attempts to recoup money allegedly owed to them.

The loan sharks even chained and padlocked the residential property’s gate before threatening to throw a Molotov cocktail at it in the future.

Yeow also claimed the loan sharks hacked her mobile phone and used voice-cloning technology to impersonate her so they could fool relatives into divulging her and her son’s locations.

She lodged a police report at the Bandar Sunway police station on Sept 29.

An alarming trend

Meanwhile, Chong said his department has received around 300 reports involving loan sharks and “scammer ah longs” since the start of 2026— which has matched the total number of cases recorded throughout 2025.

He added he has instructed his legal team to explore proposals that would make serial borrowers directly accountable under the law as they often dragged innocent family members into the mess as well.

“There are plenty of legal avenues to borrow money, yet they intentionally choose this path. It is not as if they are unaware of the dangerous consequences, yet they do it anyway.”
