A Malaysian woman has sparked an online discussion after admitting that she was considering ending a talking stage because the man she was getting to know earns less than her.
In a post, the woman shared that she works as an engineer and earns RM7,000 a month, while the man works as a technician and takes home RM4,000.
Although they are still in the early stages of getting to know each other, she said the income difference has left her worried about what life could look like if they eventually get married.
“Should I stop the talking stage? I’m worried that there may be other issues after marriage,” she wrote.
She added that she was concerned about having to downgrade her current lifestyle and did not want to live a life where she could only afford basic necessities and food.
Netizens tell her to end it early
Her post quickly gained attention, receiving over 1,900 likes and hundreds of comments at the time of writing.
Many netizens advised her to walk away if the salary gap was already making her uncomfortable.
One user said it would be better for her to end things early instead of continuing the relationship and potentially hurting the man later.
Others say income alone does not determine a marriage
However, some netizens pointed out that a person’s salary does not necessarily determine whether they would make a good partner.
One user shared that her sister earns RM10,000 while her husband earns below RM3,000, but their marriage is reportedly doing fine.
Another commenter shared a less positive experience, claiming that although his wife earned RM10,000, she often looked down on him for earning less, despite him giving her RM500 every month.
She said they were now in the process of divorcing and that she felt relieved to be leaving the marriage.
