A Malaysian woman regrets spending RM109 on three Western-style dishes at a Ramadan bazaar, sparking debate online about rising prices and value for money.
WITH the prices of food and drinks hiked up in Ramadan bazaars these days, one cannot help but to think it may be better to look at other options, such as restaurants, to break their fast at during this holy month.
While spending over RM100 can get an individual a plethora of food and drink, the cannot be said for a Malaysian woman after spending the same amount for only three items, prompting a wave of regret after the purchase.
“I instantly felt so (foolish), I should’ve just dined in instead of buying from the bazaar,” she lamented in a Threads post.
The location of the Ramadan bazaar was not disclosed in the post.
The woman shared an image of her three items which were barbequed beef ribs and brisket alongside a mac and cheese dish accompanied with shredded lamb.
Another image showed the total, with the barbequed beef ribs priced at RM28.50 for 100 grams, barbequed beef brisket at RM56.05 for 200 grams and the mac and cheese dish at RM25.
While netizens could empathise with the woman’s dissatisfaction, many could not help but point out that Western-style barbequed dishes cost nearly an arm and a leg in Malaysia.
“You ordered beef brisket and ribs. Did you expect the total to come up to RM20?” questioned a user.
Another user also claimed to have nearly purchased similar items from another Ramadan bazaar vendor but hesitated at the last minute after realising that for the hefty price quoted, they would rather dine at a “real steakhouse”.
Meanwhile, another user shared the woman’s frustration, saying that she would never buy anything from a Ramadan bazaar and would rather opt to break her fast in restaurants, citing better value for money.
