Medical certificates (MC) are legal documents that allow a sick employee to get time off and rest when they feel unwell.

Unfortunately, MCs have also been abused in the past by employees who look to sneak in “extra” time off so that they can return to work much later.

Altered MC’s details

According to mStar, an employee shared about how her colleague got himself into trouble by altering the details of his MC.

The OP said her colleague went to the clinic and was given two days of MC. However, he decided to push their luck by adding an extra stroke to the number “2” to make it look like “3”.

Kicked out from company

Unfortunately, the OP’s colleague failed to do a “clean” job in changing the MC’s details and this raised red flags within the company’s HR.

When HR contacted the clinic, they discovered that the OP’s colleague had indeed provided false information and gave him a termination notice.

For the uninitiated, forging the details of an MC can result in immediate dismissal as it violates Regulation 4(2)(f) and (g) of the Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) Regulations 1993 for public servants.

As for those working at private companies, punishment is subjected to existing company policies.
