On the first day of Ramadan, the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Kelana Jaya line experienced a major service disruption during rush hour, resulting in long queues at multiple stations as early as 6:45 AM today (19 February).

The incident circulated widely on Threads, where social media users shared their hectic experiences. Many lamented the service disruptions, fearing they would be unable to leave work on time to make it home for Iftar (breaking fast).

The disruption occurred between Gombak Station and Ampang Park Station, affecting the commutes of thousands of passengers. Train services between Gombak and KLCC stations were temporarily suspended following the fault, while engineering teams worked on-site to restore services.

One user claimed that the service had been disrupted since 6:45 AM, with crowds gradually swelling as the morning progressed.

Another affected commuter noted that she had no choice but to spend RM50 on an e-hailing ride from Setapak to TRX KL. Meanwhile, reports also surfaced of a power outage at the LRT Jelatek Station earlier this morning.

Cause of delay and service recovery

In an official statement released by Rapid Rail this morning, the organisation cited a “signalling system issue” as the cause behind the major disruption. Following repair efforts, the LRT Kelana Jaya line has been fully operational since 8:52 AM.

The disruption is believed to have been caused by an unstable power supply affecting the electronic components that control train movements between Gombak and Ampang Park.

“As a safety measure, the technical team has been stationed in the electronic components room to monitor the stability of the signalling system,” Rapid Rail stated.

In case you were unaware, you can actually request a “late slip” if you are affected by a Rapid Rail service delay. This can be used as proof for employers to explain late arrivals.
