INVESTIGATIONS into the recent arrest of a Malaysian national in Thailand for allegedly attempting to smuggle two M16 assault rifles and 450 rounds of ammunition have been officially handed over to Bukit Aman, according to Kedah Police Chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah.
Speaking to reporters at Universiti Antarabangsa Al Bukhary following a police briefing on bullying, Adzli confirmed that the federal police headquarters is now leading the probe.
“We are still awaiting updates on the case, including the modus operandi and how exactly the weapons were meant to be brought across the border,” he said.
“However, I must stress that we are always tightening border controls. It is not a matter of reacting only after an incident occurs.”
While Bukit Aman now oversees the investigation, Adzli noted that maintaining security along the Malaysia-Thailand border remains the responsibility of the Kedah police contingent.
The arrest in question involved a 46-year-old Malaysian man who was detained by Thai authorities on 5 September at a roadblock in Sadao. The suspect was reportedly found in possession of two M16 rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition inside his vehicle.
In a related development, Adzli issued a stern warning against any collusion between enforcement officers and smuggling syndicates, particularly those dealing in firearms and narcotics.
“There will be no compromise with any enforcement personnel involved in smuggling activities or any form of breach at the border,” he said.
“If there is evidence of misconduct, whether by police officers or other enforcement agents, the public should report it immediately. We will take firm action without hesitation.” - September 9, 2025
