In a resolute stance against accusations of selective prosecution, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki, reaffirmed the agency's commitment to professionalism and impartiality in its pursuit of justice. Addressing concerns raised by opposition leaders, Azam underscored MACC's unwavering dedication to upholding the rule of law, irrespective of individuals' affiliations or backgrounds.

Rejecting assertions of being a mere instrument of the government, Azam emphasized MACC's autonomy and integrity as a guardian of transparency and accountability in Malaysia's governance landscape. He adamantly dismissed claims of bias in recent prosecutions, asserting that MACC's actions are guided solely by the principles of professionalism and adherence to due process.

Azam asserted, "I do not agree with the statement because our action is a professional action, regardless of who is the government official, the politician of the 'government of the day' and so on. When there is a report and an offense, we will accuse in court, that's all my job, I don't have selective prosecution here."

Azam's remarks come in the wake of allegations leveled by Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, Leader of the Opposition, following the prosecution of his son. Despite assertions of political motivation behind the charges, Azam reiterated MACC's adherence to due process and emphasized that the decision to prosecute is based solely on evidence and legal merits, devoid of any political bias or influence.

The recent prosecution involved Hamzah's son, Muhammad Faisal Hamzah, who was charged with accepting a bribe of RM100,000 to influence a company tender six years ago. Muhammad Faisal, a businessman and consultant, pleaded not guilty to the charges brought before the Sessions Court.

This is not the first instance of legal scrutiny for Muhammad Faisal, as he previously faced charges related to the subsidized cooking oil case. Despite claims of political persecution by Hamzah, Azam reiterated MACC's commitment to impartiality and the rule of law, ensuring that justice prevails regardless of individuals' political affiliations.
