The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has clarified that it currently has no immediate intentions to arrest former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad amidst ongoing investigations into the asset declaration issue. Tan Sri Azam Baki, the chief commissioner of MACC, made this announcement during the launch of the National Anti-Corruption Strategies 2024-2028 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.

Responding to queries from reporters regarding the possibility of Dr Mahathir's detention in light of the investigations, Azam affirmed that no such plans were in place as the investigations were still underway. The statement comes after Azam confirmed on April 26 that Dr Mahathir was among those under investigation for their asset declarations.

The investigation into Dr Mahathir and his sons, Mirzan and Tan Sri Mokhzani, began when they were served notices on January 18 and January 26 to declare all their assets, both movable and immovable, within the country and abroad. Given the extensive nature of their assets, the MACC granted them a 30-day extension to comply with the notice.

Subsequently, Mokhzani was subjected to investigations under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorist Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

Addressing another matter, Azam clarified that no investigations had been initiated against Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming regarding the RM5.21 million allocation for the Hulu Selangor Municipal Council ahead of the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election. He emphasized that while there were no formal reports filed, the MACC would review media reports concerning the issue to determine if any corrupt practices were involved.

Earlier in the month, the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) criticized the announcement of the RM5.21 million allocation for upgrading public infrastructure facilities in Kuala Kubu Baru, alleging that it amounted to vote-buying and violated campaigning laws. In response, Nga Kor Ming expressed readiness to cooperate with the Election Commission regarding the complaints raised.

The MACC's commitment to conducting thorough investigations and upholding transparency underscores its role in combating corruption and ensuring accountability within the Malaysian government. As these inquiries progress, the public can expect further updates on the outcomes of the investigations and any subsequent actions taken by the authorities.
