PUTRAJAYA - Negative perceptions and prejudices surrounding investigations should not cause the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to be intimidated, as long as every investigation is carried out in accordance with the law, procedures and proper guidelines.
MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman said confidence in the integrity of the investigation process and the professionalism of officers must continue to be upheld despite the agency frequently facing various public perceptions.
He said MACC would continue to uphold professionalism, transparency and integrity in carrying out its entrusted responsibilities.
"In any investigation, those involved may be dissatisfied and form negative perceptions and that is their right. However, if we carry out our duties according to the law, procedures and the correct guidelines, we have no reason to be afraid or intimidated.
"We must prove it through our actions and work results. We cannot satisfy everyone; what matters is carrying out our responsibilities with sincerity, honesty and full commitment," he said during the MACC's "Kolar Hitam Bukan Sekadar Operasi" podcast on Wednesday.
He stressed that perceptions would always exist, but confidence in the integrity of the process and the professionalism of officers must be maintained.
Commenting on individuals who comment on or question MACC investigations before the process is completed, Abd Halim said everyone has the right to express their views, but such rights come with certain limitations.
He said the public should exercise caution when commenting on ongoing cases to ensure their remarks are not seen as interfering with, influencing or prejudicing the investigation process.
"The right to express opinions is the right of every individual, but every right has its limits.
"When a case is still under investigation, the public must be careful so that comments are not perceived as interfering with, influencing or prejudicing the investigation," he said.
He added that Section 48 of the MACC Act 2009 provides for offences related to acts that obstruct or interfere with investigations.
"Therefore, give enforcement agencies the trust and space to carry out their duties," he said.
