Madison Square Garden has explained why the New York Knicks did not move forward with the approved Game 4 watch party outside the arena.

The decision became another major off-court story before the Knicks faced the San Antonio Spurs, with City Hall and MSG trading blame over who stopped fans from gathering outside the Garden.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said his office approved the permit Madison Square Garden requested. MSG’s response was that the approved setup was too limited to feel fair to the rest of the fanbase.

Fred Katz shared Madison Square Garden’s statement on why it declined to use the permit granted by Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s office.

“Madison Square Garden and the New York Knicks declined to use the permit that was granted by Mayor Mamdani’s office due to the fact that only 1,000 people would be allowed to enter the area and they would need to be ticketed,” the MSG stated.

They added, “Leaving the tens of thousands of people who want to come to The Garden to celebrate the Knicks out in the cold.”

“We did not think it was fair to just allow a small group to celebrate outside The Garden when everybody else was being shut out.”

The statement pushed back against the idea that MSG simply walked away from a normal watch party. The Garden’s position was that a ticketed event for roughly 1,000 people would have created a privileged pocket of fans while everyone else was kept away.

Madison Square Garden and Zohran Mamdani dispute New York Knicks permit limits

The fight started after the city approved a smaller, controlled watch party following Game 3 security issues and crowd problems around Knicks viewing areas. Mamdani said MSG had asked for a permit for 500 to 999 fans and received approval for the maximum number.

MSG saw that differently. The organization argued that the city’s restricted zones, ticketing requirement, and crowd cap made the celebration too controlled for a fanbase that expected tens of thousands to gather near the arena.

The disagreement also followed a tense week around Madison Square Garden. Donald Trump’s Game 3 visit brought heightened security, while violence and arrests after the Knicks’ loss added pressure on the city to avoid another chaotic scene.

That left the Knicks watch party stuck between two arguments. City Hall said safety required limits, while MSG said the limits defeated the entire purpose of bringing New York fans together outside the Garden.
