MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.0 earthquake shook the province of Surigao del Sur on Thursday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs director Teresito Bacolcol said the tremor happened at 8:06 a.m. some 40 kilometers (kms) northeast of Marihatag.

Tectonic in origin, the quake had a depth of 10 kms, Phivolcs said.

Although damage to infrastructure was unlikely, Bacolcol said aftershocks were expected.
