KUALA LUMPUR - A moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 struck northern Sumatra at 12.18 pm today, with tremors felt in several areas along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said that the quake was centred at 4.2 degrees North and 97.6 degrees East, at a depth of 10 kilometres (km).

"The epicentre was located about 55 km southwest of Langsa, Indonesia,” it said in a statement.

MetMalaysia has urged members of the public who felt the tremors to complete the department's online questionnaire to assist in gathering information on the impact of the earthquake. - BERNAMA
