Champion Foods LLC has voluntarily recalled certain batches of Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread sold across the United States due to the possibility of salmonella contamination.

The action follows an earlier recall involving milk powder supplied by California Dairies, Inc., an ingredient that was later used in a seasoning blend incorporated into the affected products. No illnesses have been reported, but consumers are being advised not to eat the recalled items.

The recall affects specific lots of Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread sold through major retailers nationwide. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the measure is being taken as a precaution after concerns emerged about a milk powder ingredient that may have been contaminated with Salmonella.

Champion Foods said the potentially affected ingredient entered the supply chain through a third-party manufacturer that produces a seasoning blend used in the company’s 5 cheese sauce blend. Although testing did not detect the bacteria in the seasoning batches, the company proceeded with the recall for consumer safety.

Recall Linked to Milk Powder Ingredient Used in Seasoning Blend

According to Champion Foods LLC, the recall stems from a California Dairies, Inc. milk powder recall that raised concerns about possible salmonella contamination. The milk powder was supplied to a third-party manufacturer whose seasoning blend is used in the production of Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread.

In its public announcement, Champion Foods stated that routine testing conducted by the seasoning blend manufacturer before the ingredient was used in production returned negative results for Salmonella. Even so, the company said it decided to remove affected products from the market “out of an abundance of caution.”

The FDA notes that salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly among young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. In otherwise healthy individuals, symptoms may include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, more severe illnesses can occur if the infection spreads beyond the intestinal tract.

Champion Foods reported that neither the company nor its suppliers had received any reports of illness or injury associated with the recalled products as of the announcement date.

Products Affected and Guidance for Consumers

According to the FDA, the recall covers specific batches of Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread sold as both single-pack and two-pack products. The affected items were distributed nationwide through a broad range of retailers, including Costco, Walmart, Target, Kroger, Publix, Meijer, Hy-Vee, Food City, Giant Landover, Grocery Outlet, Jewel, Schnucks, and several other grocery distributors.

Consumers can identify affected products by checking the “sell by” date printed in black inside the cheese bread image on the front of the packaging. The recall applies only to the listed date codes published by the FDA and Champion Foods.

The recalled products include Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread Single Pack with UPC 8 70375 00511 1 and Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread 2 Pack with UPC 8 70375 00509 8. Multiple sell-by dates ranging from February through April 2027 are included in the recall notice.

According to Champion Foods, consumers who purchased products from the affected lots should not consume them. The company has directed customers seeking additional information to contact its consumer support channels while the recall continues in coordination with the FDA.
