Malaysia Airlines plane aborts take-off after black smoke seen at Narita Airport

A MALAYSIA Airlines plane bound for Kuala Lumpur aborted take-off Thursday morning at Narita Airport near Tokyo due to a problem with the aircraft, Kyodo News said.

According to the transport ministry, none of the 160 crew and passengers was injured.

Black smoke was reportedly seen coming from the Airbus A330 plane when it was moving onto one of the airport's runways at around 10:40 am.

Operating as Flight 89, the plane is believed to have had a problem with its left engine, according to the airport branch of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

The runway was closed for about two and a half hours.

According to NHK, the fire department received a report at around 10:40 am local time that something resembling black smoke could be seen coming from an aircraft engine at the airport.

Footage aired by NHK showed the aircraft parked on the runway at around 11 a.m., with several fire engines and ambulances around it as personnel worked to deal with the incident. – August 20, 2026
