The national Malaysia Day celebration on Sept 16 in Kuching has been moved indoors to BCCK due to worsening haze conditions in Sarawak.
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysia Day celebration in Kuching on Sept 16 will be held indoors at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) due to worsening haze conditions in Kuching and Serian, Sarawak.
Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the decision was made after taking into account the haze situation, which would prevent outdoor activities from proceeding.
“The haze situation, which is quite concerning in Kuching and Serian, Sarawak, will result in outdoor activities not being able to proceed,” he said at a press conference here.
He said the Malaysia Day celebration would instead be held indoors at the BCCK on the evening of Sept 16.
Meanwhile, Fahmi said preparations for a cloud-seeding operation in Sarawak would depend on the Malaysian Meteorological Department’s assessment of suitable cloud formations.
He said several cloud formations detected had been deemed unsuitable because wind movement had pushed them towards the South China Sea.
“If cloud seeding were carried out, the rain would not fall in the areas where it is needed,” he said.
He added that the operation would therefore depend on further assessments and decisions by the Malaysian Meteorological Department.
