SHAH ALAM – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed Formula 1's return to Malaysia, describing the hosting of the 2026 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit as a reflection of the country's ability to stage world-class sporting events and its close ties with the Kingdom of Bahrain.
In a statement, Anwar said he had spoken with His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain, and Formula 1 President and Chief Executive Officer Stefano Domenicali following the announcement.
He thanked Prince Salman, the Bahraini government and its people for the trust and confidence placed in Malaysia.
"We are honoured to support the Kingdom of Bahrain, Formula 1 and the FIA in hosting the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang International Circuit this year," he said.
Anwar said the collaboration goes beyond hosting a world-class race. It reflects the strong friendship, mutual trust and close partnership between Malaysia and Bahrain, while reaffirming Malaysia's readiness to host major international events.
He said Malaysia is ready to welcome Formula 1, the FIA, teams and fans back to Sepang, where they will experience the country's world-class infrastructure, operational excellence and warm hospitality.
The 2026 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix will be held at the Sepang International Circuit from Oct 2 to 4, with the race taking place on Oct 4, marking Formula 1's return to Malaysia after a nine-year absence.
The official announcement confirms Sinar Daily's report published earlier today, which revealed that Formula 1 was set for a surprise return to Sepang on Oct 4 after a nine-year absence.
