Man charged with attempted murder after car hit pedestrians in town centre

A 40-year-old man has been charged with five counts of attempted murder after a car hit a group of pedestrians in a town centre, leaving one man with life-threatening injuries.

Nottinghamshire Police said the incident involved a red Vauxhall Astra and happened in Market Place, Arnold, on Saturday morning at 1.12am, following an “altercation” in the town centre a short time earlier.

A group of people was struck by the vehicle, with one man suffering life-threatening injuries and four other men sustaining less serious injuries.

The car was abandoned at the scene following the incident, with the driver subsequently fleeing on foot.

The force said Duane Anthony, 40, has been charged with five counts of attempted murder, aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified and driving without valid insurance.

Anthony, of Marton Road, Chilwell, is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning.

Football club Woodthorpe Park Rangers said in a statement on Sunday that one of its players is fighting for his life in hospital after the incident.

The club said three members of its team, including the manager, were struck by a car in Arnold town centre.

The statement said: “We are hoping and praying for our player who is a much loved lad by all, we’re supporting each other the best we can.

“We are all clearly struggling right now and are asking for privacy and respect so we can get our heads around what has happened, this is a heartbreaking and awful time for our club.”

Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “As we share today’s news, our thoughts remain with those affected by this incident, in particular the man who sustained life-threatening injuries.

“The victims and their families have been updated on today’s charging decision, which we hope will provide some small degree of comfort at this difficult time.

“This was a shocking incident that will have been incredibly distressing for all those involved and anyone who witnessed it happen.

“On that note, I’d ask people to please not speculate about this incident, online or otherwise, as doing so could potentially impede the pursuit of justice.

“As our investigation continues, I would like to thank the entire investigation team, who worked around the clock throughout the weekend to help secure these charges.”
